musemistress | Jul. 24th, 2008 07:34 pm The Dark Knight With a combination of nerves facing my BIG MOVE and general tiredness from packing, I met webshark at Amersfoort station last night and we headed off to Utrecht to see THA MOVIE! He had preordered the tickets a week before and, as it was a special night, the movie theatre itself was set out with a box of nachos and assorted sauce and a bottle of beer per chair. Mind you it was nearly a full house and I was still recovering from the falafel Therry fed me from earlier that night. So with that vegetarian dish rumbling around digesting, I dug into the nachos and salsa sause, settling down for a good watch that was also a type of tribute.
These were the random thoughts that went through my head during the movie, no particular order about things that happened in the movie, and reacting to what was around me...doubt there are ANY spoilers.
- Dude, evil...but fun evil - WTF this sauce aint Mustard! - Don't sound like his own vo...WTF TEH AWESOME WEEEEE!!!!!!!!! - Oh oh oh fun fun fun weeee oh icky ow whoot!! - Mmmm bad. No more chips, eat salsa. - Ya ya Batman, wanna see Joker. - Ohhh splut! BANG!!!!! kickass! - Yes, Batman we see you. Where the %#@& is Joker!!!??? - Oh damn. That's gotta hurt! - I repeat...me.wants.JOKER!!! - WTF THERRY YOU GOT BEER ON MY GLASS...oh damn dude, you ok? You know you got some down the back of that guys neck. - Oh, empty seats...FREE BEER!!! - Weee tipsodee doo...OH Joker. - Hehe he's such an evil bastard...sorta...is he? - Cooooooooooooool - Crap am gonna feel this salsa in the morning - Haha he needs to pee - Haha that guy is scared of me - JOKER RULZ!!!! - *sniff* Heath... - Wait...what? - STOP POPPING BEER BOTTLES!!! *pops her own* hehehehehehe - Joker is GODS!!!!! - *nailbites for 10 minutes straight* - GO POLICEDUDES!!!!!
So...yes. That was spluttered over with no order. Generally I couldn't see past the smudge of beer for a while and Therry's exclamations of "Sorry, so sorry..." were not quiet enough to gain sympathy from others. But the whole place was so alive, one thing must be said...
BEST JOKER EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Current Mood: impressed

sna | Jul. 22nd, 2008 06:17 pm Head-dot-wall I was making an entry on my really good past week while cleaning up my house and moving some heavy stuff up to the attic, when my ankle just gave up. I had tumbled off the stairs in the school's library two weeks prior and my ankle was still a bit 'twingy' but nothing that suggested just quiting. That left me falling down my _own_ stairs, and lying in my house's entryway with two boxes and wondering what the heck happened. I have a pretty sturdy physique, rarely any kind of problems that persist beyond a mild alergy to cats. I am not used to it just giving up.
The doc figures it are probably microfractures in the bones of my left foot and some pretty bruised deep tissue, leaving me with my feet up and praying that the pics that need to be taken on Thursday bear good news. Suffice to say that I feel terrible, not only with my primary vacation, Drachenfest, in yeopardy, but as usual there are also a lot of people who count on my car and cargospace. At the least it'll spell very bad news for my participation in the endbattle...
Godsdammit, I have been looking forward to this for nigh three quarters of a year. Please, please, please be allright. 16 comments - Leave a comment

Waar staat Dolle Griet?

jenniebreeden | Jul. 19th, 2008 01:01 am Booth 2003 So I've been getting ready for San Diego comic convention for the past two weeks. It doesn't matter how long you have, you're never ready for this show. And I'm smashing my head against the wall because the second graphic novel will not be there. But I've got shot glasses and stuff so...
I'm going to be at Booth 2003 This is not in artist alley. Last year Aeire got a bunch of webcomic artist together for a booth. I think we're in the small press area. Right down the way from marvel, dc, vertigo, and dark horse...yeah, this should be interesting. Booth 2003 will have Something Positive, Two Lumps, Punch an Pie, and Striptease. In a ten foot space. We're going to eat each other alive, I just know it. So come by Booth 2003 and see the sardine can full of webcomic goodness. 17 comments - Leave a comment

janestarz | Jul. 18th, 2008 10:05 am Gadgets, juice and the environment In one of those free newspapers was an article about shopping "green". With an eye on the environment. Thanks to Al Gore, everything should be "green" these days, and I don't oppose the fact that people are more conscious of the environment, although the complete hype about it might have an adverse effect.
The article, as far as I can recall, stated that if half the households in Great Britain would buy a plasma television, the UK would need to build two addition nuclear power plants to generate enough power to supply the juice. Two. Nuclear. Nukular, as Dubya would say.
What are we going to do with the waste?
People say I worry about these kind of things too much. They don't understand I get worked up about things like this. They say if people want a plasma television, they should buy a plasma television and that's that. Please, please, please! Has everybody gone completely insane? Have they? Current Mood: scared

janestarz | Jul. 17th, 2008 11:49 am The Summoning XIII This would be the first event that NoKey and I would portray Dandin and Aliph, loyal guards of Lord Inukai Mori'gil (played by drahkan). ( Follow me onto the Vortex, where a portal can be opened to any world you like... ) There was a lot more going on, rituals, intrigue and battle, but though Lord Mori'gil is a busy man, we protected him well enough. I really loved the endbattle, where I had taken over Lord Mori'gil's spear and was thwacking monsters with it to keep his flanks free.
It was a good event, although my costume needs some adaptations. Good costumes grow and accumulate, after all. Current Mood: relaxed

maglok | Jul. 16th, 2008 03:17 pm Setting the mood: Invisible SLs Been thinking of what kind of one-off's I would want to eventually organise a bit lately. Always had some ideas in my head, Black Box made it 'worse' by being a one shot. I would love to do a good horror one shot.
Which rises the following core problem: SLs are so visible lately. You want them to be visible, so that people can ask questions to them easily and they are readily available for calls. This is proper SL protocol. Then again it also effectively takes a sledgehammer to the mood of the larp. SLs are all around you, they are there when your alone in the forest running from something. They are there when your trying to force a lock and do some thievery. It's pretty accepted in generic dutch larp, but if you were to organise a horror one shot, you have a serious problem.
Horror, for me, is all about mood and build up. The gallons of blood are fun for a climax, but they do not continually keep your players entertained. It's the mood that does this. This is where the problem of the visible SL arises, he ruins the mood by being there. Alone in a forest, hiding from something, running from your life perhaps? A lot less scary if there is a SL running along with you. How scary is a SL walking right behind a scary creature to 'call' his supernatural powers? Not very much.
Step one in creating a good horror larp is thus getting the SL to be invisible. It's just a different mindset really, and there are a lot of ways around the SLs visibility. A big side effect though is that if your SL is invisible, you are goint to lose the ability for people to ask questions to your SLs. On one side this enhances the mood, on the other it might confuse the player.
Here are some ideas: Black Box had their SLs all playing a part while the game was going on. They were not even officially SLs, though you could always ask them a quick OC question (like 'does my GPS system work if I check it?') and they would anwser you out of character. There were also no SLs needed, it was just propelled by the PCs. This is one way, but let's take this into context of a horror larp. Having your SLs around is actually comforting, like watching a horror movie with good friends opposed to alone in the dark at midnight.
This sparked another idea. What if you organise the one shot horror larp and only your main organiser is known. For example I organise a horror larp and ask several people to be SLs that are the eyes and ears, and in extreme situations can make a call (though we established before we don't want calls!) Does that add to the mood before the game even started? "Yes there are SLs among you, but we are not telling you who they are." Still it would be kind of obvious if your running in a forest, supposedly alone, and one of the 'supposed' players runs along with you to [insert poor excuse for being there], that guy is actually a SL. Still it's already better then the SL being there OC.
Though to me the real scare does happen OC. You can play scared, but you really want people to be scared OC. I had a real bunch of screamish characters once at a special in a dark world with lots of walls and scary masked monsters. They always had a guide, but there was also always a SL near them, since we needed to know what they were up to. Still though they screamed out quite loud, on several occasions. The cover of darkness definately helped and the perfect execution of the team. Still though, it was more the shock effect and not actual scaryness.
Here is another thing I came up with. Put your players in a manor. Put up cameras (IC even) and monitor them. Don't ever show yourselves to the PCs. Of course I see that backfiring due to equipment not working, sound being bad or non-exsistant and people just hiding from the cameras.
A slight variation on that is let the players do the actual filming. Give them a camera, Blair Witch Project style, and let them do their thing, while you watch the camera to determine what is going on.
All of this of course brings up the question, do you even need SLs? Sometimes you do, sometimes you don't is my anwser to that. There are pro's and con's. I have seen sandboxes without SLs work and fail. For this I am assuming you need SLs.
Every larp would probably need a different way of making SLs invisible, if at all possible.
So how would you make SLs invisible?

janestarz | Jul. 15th, 2008 11:34 am On the subject of kids... A lot of people around me are spouting youngsters. Suddenly there is this sqealing being whose survival completely depends on them and they love it and hold it and cuddle it and make funny noises at it.
People ask me what I think of kids. Recently, I have had to adjust my View on Kids a bit. Jonah climbed onto me, prodding his 2 year old elbow into my solar plexus and lived to tell the tale.
People ask me when I am going to have kids. My own mother has finally grasped the concept that she might have to look towards her son if she ever wants to be a grandmother.
As for all the rest of you, you might want to read Ursula's entry on the subject. My view on ostriches is a little different, and I might be leaning more towards the platypus, but her comparison is valid. And the post is damned entertaining.
I believe the world really is a better place because there's kids in it. It's just that I will not have any. 5 comments - Leave a comment

sna | Jul. 14th, 2008 05:11 pm Trip to London or: why Sna and public transportation don't get along.
Lies and I had been wanting to go to London for a while now, and despite an abortive attempt in the spring we were really going to go now. It has been financed with the 'Pluim', the christmas gift from Nutricia, and as such was a bit of a closing of that period for me. We had shopped Thursday for fresh reading material, and I had splurged just a bit because I really wanted some good books and needed some reseach material for a new campaign I am set to storytell on Tuesdaynights to start in about a month to month-and-a-half from now.
We packed and left around 11 on Friday to catch the train from Rotterdam Centraal to Brussels, to board the Eurostar there. The trip was okay, but the trains were very, very full and it was somewhat cramped till we got through passportcontrol and boarded our assigned seats on the Eurostar. By that time I was over halfway through Dark Heresy: Inquisitor's Handbook, a roleplaying supplement for the Dark Heresy game (been wanting it for a while since the Blackhammer Symbols guys are pretty enthousiastic about it and we have similar tastes). More about that later. We arrived in London two hours later, and made our way into King's Cross station, there to transfer to the Underground to Victoria Station, and from there taking the railway to East Croydon. Phew. London Rush Hour is challenging. We arrived at our hotel, Jury's Inn, about an hour and a half after arriving in London, and we went up to our room to settle and chill a bit. After that we went food hunting and grabbed some junk food on the run before retiring for the evening with our bookies and cup of tea. And a good bath, because that is the only thing my house lacks and hotels have in abundant supply. The next day we got up around 9, had breakfast and moved into London proper. We did a walking tour over Victoria and Waterloo roads, raiding a bookstore and checking a few landmarks while we were at it, as those roads pass the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. We had a quick breather in the park overlooking the Thames and went to have lunch in a pub on Lambeth road, opposite to your next destination, the Imperial War Museum. Now that I can heartily recommend to anyone. The building is beautiful, the exhibits well maintained and _all_ original (up to and including the command-tank of Montgomery), and the entrance free, though they offer the chance for a voluntary donation, which we did. Dwelled through a few wonderful expositions, of which "The Children's War" managed to silence even me, with the second World War seen through the eyes of the children who lived through it. It was very disturbing and impressive. After the museum we walked to Waterloo station to check out the Imax there was Lies wanted to add another country to her list where she'd gone to the cinema (same as in Vienna, really ;-) ), but the Imax had a dissapointing selection and we went to Leicester square, where we got tickets to "Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D", and that movie was most enjoyable (fairly mindless flick, but I liked it, and especially the detail they had hired an Islandic person to play an Islandic person in the movie. Rarer then you might think... It was getting late, so we travelled back to our hotel and went to sleep fairly early as we were both dead on our feet. The next day it was unfortunately time to go home again, so we packed, had breakfast, red some more and started on the long journey back. East Croydon train to Victoria, then the sub to King's Cross and the Eurostar to Brussels. So far so good, and we got to the Brussels - Rotterdam train on time. We left from Brussels and got to Antwerp, but the train stopped there due to an accident on the tracks ahead. After being asked to get off the train for busses, then back on the train till Roosendaal and there booted off the train to wait for yet another (delayed) train to Rotterdam got both on my and Lies' nerves (it was approaching 19:00 and dinner was still not in sight), but we made the best for it. By that time I had also played through the Inquisitor Eisenhorn Trilogy and most of Terry Pratchett's Making Money, so I at least was not bored. After seeing that train being delayed ever further, I played the 'father' card, asking him to be on standbye in case of bad problems and to pick us up op Capelsebrug. It was 21:00, well over three hours after projected arrival time, that we arrived home only by dint of having a great dad who happens to live nearby. Never missed my own car this much. All in all, a great Holiday, though I will opt for the airplane next time, as I did when visiting London previously. Still, got loot (Making Money and Darkly Dreaming Dexter) and had fun, and that is what matters.
The rest of my week is fairly quiet, with chilling tonight and tomorrow, gaming on Wednesday, visiting friends on Thursday and doing some more gaming on Friday and Saturday (oh, woe me! *grin*), with a visit to either Prince Caspian, The Dark Knight or some other decent movie as a possibility. Nae bad.
So, on to the gaming. We've been doing the Tuesdayevening group for a while now, with me DM-ing and Julian, Dennis, Robert, Lies and Simone playing. Jos was part of the group for a while, too, but he is very busy with his new job and his new house but I expect him to ping us when he's got time again, whenever that will be. After starting with Alternity we've played Exalted, Mage, some D&D, some GURPS and now Aberrant, too. But that campaign is ending, and we're up for a next one. After a lot of campaigns that were mostly political / heavy roleplay the group, after much debate, decided the following: after a short mini-campaign we will play a group in Warhammer 40k, a no-holds-barred slugfest using the Alternity rulesystem (cause its adaptable, fast and the group knows it by heart having played it for over three years). The group will most likely play Inquisitorial Death Watch Space Marines & consorts, featuring the very best from the Ordo Xenos, Adeptus Arbites, Adeptus Astartes and Officio Assasinorum. Inspiration was mainly provided by the Dawn of War and the (virtually unknown) Final Liberation intromovies, and the group members that did not know the 40k universe yet were quickly won over. Now for me the challenge of adapting my storyteller-style to an almost wargame-ish game withhout falling in the old trap of wanting it to go tactical. Nope, my job it is to provide blood-curdling, visciral, up-close-and-personal, in-your-face, combi-weapon boltgun-flamer-multi-melta action. Hmm. That IS a challenge.
Still, my greater challenge awaits with the mini campaign in between, because years ago as an April Fools joke Wizards of the Coast released a picture of the My Little Pony Roleplaying Game. And yes, some poor sod built a d20 rulesystem, too. So I find myself in the unenviable position of storytelling the adventures of my ponies as they tackle the challenges of everyday life in Ponyville before I can lose myself in the carnage of the 41st Millenium. Well, that is what I get for letting my party decide the game to play... Still, I might be able to salvage some of my masculinity as I discovered this sketch by Robot Chicken during my research (and check their Star Wars Sketch... it be hilarious). More on the terrifying world of WarPony40k later (based loosely on the abomination of HelloKitty 40k) later. If I have the nerve. maglok | Jul. 14th, 2008 02:35 pm It's official, I suck at drilling Ok so I was planning on drilling holes for all the 'plinten' in my house this weekend. Well after 5 holes the drill thing gave up. Turns out I was using a drill that just wasn't anywhere near strong enough to go through concrete. So I ended up painting some.
Next weekend I can't work on it, so it'll have to be the weekend after that. Saturday I will have to go to the Rabobank and talk to Julian though. Basically, next time I can work on my darned house is 27th of july!
This rate it's never going to get done. To compare: I need to do most 'plinten', 'vensterbanken' and of the paintwork I have 2 of 4 windows done, 2 of 8 doorposts, and 2 of 8 doorposts are painted for the first time (need touch ups). Hell I got the darn house 9th of june, this is going bloody slow!
27th Martin is gonna help with the drilling and I probably snagged another person. I want this thing done darnit. Work issues are not helping!

Phew, hard to find songs with lyrics if your prime collection consists of movie soundtracks and scores. 6 comments - Leave a comment

maglok | Jul. 11th, 2008 09:30 am Film review: The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian Ain't seen the movie yet? Turn away.
So watched The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, quite a mouthfull, ticket only said 'The Chronicle' so I guess it thought it was quite a long name as well. Obviously the movie revolves around a Prince called Caspian and those kids from Brittain that turn up in Narnia again.
This movie is particularly darker then The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. Much more slashing, hacking, dark stuff, kinda like the more recent Harry Potter movies. There is a scene that is supposed to be quite a 'dark' scene, it wasn't that dark in the movie though, to bad.
The land of Narnia is once again brought to live with many special effects, I mean come on talking badgers and a serious comic-relief mouse that reminds me of a certain puss in certain boots. Speaking of deja-vu: Treant attack, river comes to live. Rings a bell? Hm, ah well this is done on a more childish, Narnian way.
The actors are good enough, especially props to the girl that played Lucy, she really carries some of the movie with her search for Aslan, and does so admirably. Liam Neeson returning as Aslan was as good a reason as any for me to watch the movie, to bad he was hardly used. Prince Caspian though, Ban Barnes from Stardust's prologue, is dissapointing. The main bad guy, with whom he is related, has a spanish vibe so the director figured, let's give Caspian a spanish accent. I can live with that, but please for the love of Aslan stick with it! He changes accents all the time, to me it was quite noticable and annoying.
Speaking of the director, Andrew Adamson. The guy from the first Narnia and Shrek stuff. I guess it's not Puss-in-boots stealing if it is from your own stuff right? He did an ok job.
Music could have been better at points, but it did what it needed to do, it gave it that epic feeling. Main titles were especially nice. Gregson-Williams is afterall a veteran to the scene.
While women have Caspian to look at, the men must choose between either a young girl or a very young girl or a frozen witch, go us.
To sum it up it was an ok movie, not particularly awesome, but awesome enough. If you like fantasy, see it. If you like Narnia, see it. If you just want some entertainment, see it. If you expect the next Lord of the Rings, don't and wait for Harry Potter 6.
